The Ken February 12
The Ken February 12, 2018
Attendance: Bill Brucker
Split Club: Paul Chisolm
Invocation: Larry
Fine master:  Mike Ford / Rick Graham
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Tom began our lightly attended meeting with a loud gong. We gave our Pledge and Larry gave a fine invocation. We waived the song, probably in lieu of the light crowd. We could have hurt someone. Our guests today were Jim Jones from the Town of Tonawanda and Walt Ludwig, President of Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Sarah representing the Kenmore Bee was present to take a few pictures.
Dick has our Shred It event on track for 4/21. He will have a brief meeting after our regular meeting 2/26. Dawn also has our Wine event for 5/10 ready to go. She too will meet with her committee after our meeting 2/26. Rick has ordered the wine cooler as one of our prizes again. Dawn announced that Chuck and Mary Kay will host our gift basket gathering party April 6 or 7th. Details to follow. We always need baskets. Tom thanked Mike Ford for lining up 3 speakers for March. No meeting next week.
Tom asked Rick Graham to present Walt and Sue a check to Kenmore Mercy Hospital from our foundation in the amount of $6500. Walt thanked us and explained that the money will help the hospital expand to 2 more lactation rooms for employees and guests of the hospital.
In a peculiar turn of events, Mike Ford asked Rick to pay a hefty fine or come up to administer the fine. Rick chose the latter. I confessed to Gretchen’s God Daughter Trisha Mangan representing the US in a couple of the skiing events at the Olympics. Sue J reminded us that #9 Falzer from WNY is also representing the US in Hockey. Quick witted and cheating from Mike’s agenda, we had a lot of fun and raised some money.
Rick G won the split club and Bill Brucker missed the Ace.
Larry briefly (??) introduced our speaker. Representing the Town of Tonawanda, Jim Jones. Jim is the engineer supervisor. He has been with the Town for 30 years. First part of Jim’s program were the Towns trees. Every tree in the Town has to be inventoried. We have 30,000 trees. 6,000 in the parks and the rest on the streets. There is a grid on the website that identifies each tree. They had a problem with the Emerald Ash bug. Trees are so important for absorbing water and provides oxygen to the air. The second part of Jim’s program was a discussion converting the incinerator on 2 Mile Creek road into a road and park setting. The Town burnt all their trash there between 1930-1982. Then the trash had to be hauled off to landfills. This area is being called Pirson Route and is becoming a green re forested area to walk, bike and picnic.
Lastly, Jim touched base on what we should do with the 3 private cemeteries in the Town. Failing Cemetery, Workley Cemetery and St. Peters Cemetery. The Town has to maintain them. There are no living heirs left to people buried there. Pat G wants to look for gold fillings that must be abundant throughout.
Jim gave a great talk and is a wealth of knowledge. We are lucky to have him at the Town. Tom and Rick presented Jim a check in the amount of $5K to be used for planting trees. Rotary has a challenge going on about some incentive if we encourage tree planting.  Great program
Meeting adjourned

The Ken February 5
The Ken February 5, 2018
Attendance: Bill Brucker
Split Club: Paul Chisolm
Invocation: Moment of Silence
Fine master:  Mike Ford
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
After a loud gong, Tom began our meeting with the Pledge. We followed with “God Bless America” led off by Chuck Patterson. Tom asked for a moment of silence to reflect on all those less fortunate.
Our guests today were Jim Moribitto from the Clarence Rotary Club and our speaker Suzanne Desfosses-Gilliam.
Jim made an announcement on behalf of our District 7090. He encouraged us to learn and try to qualify for our Districts Grants. Rotary’s Foundation is the finest foundation of all similar groups. There is a ranking system and we get 4 out of 4 stars each year. Learn more about how to qualify at www.rotary.org. He also is pushing the “End Polio Now” campaign. Bill Gates has given us $750M so far. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation studied many organizations and chose us because of our record. When we started our campaign to end Polio, there were 350,000 cases. We are now down to 22. Somewhere in this world, there are children inoculated and will not got Polio because of Rotary.
Rick Graham announced that the Science Museum will offer a tour of the facilities to us. Stay tuned with details. Rick also reminded us to be thinking about baskets for our Wine Event. Meetings are planned and we are under way. Dick H. has Shred It scheduled for 4/21. His meetings will begin at the end of February.
Fine Master, Mike Ford took confessions. Sue J’s. son was named captain of his College Lacrosse team. Rick Graham confessed to not winning any super bowl sheets. As it turned out, he did win one but thought it unnecessary to confess because it was only $100. Mike Austin was on TV for coaching while at a Sabres Game?? Paul C attended the Robotics program at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Paul was real impressed. Mike hit us with Super Bowl questions. He did tell us last week to pay attention to the game. Fun time collecting some money.
Art won the split club and Rene missed the Ace.
Mike Ford introduced our speaker, Suzanne Desfosses-Gilliam. Suzanne is president of Touching Hearts at Home. Their mission is to help seniors, people with disabilities, and those who are battling illness, to preserve their quality of life and remain independent in their own homes around the greater Buffalo area. Susanne had passion in her program and kept us all well informed.

The Ken January 29, 2018
Attendance: Audrey Meyers
Split Club: Chuck Patterson
Invocation: John Coogan
Fine master:  Paul Chisolm
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Meeting adjourned.
Tom began our meeting with the Pledge. We followed with a wonderful rendition of “America” led off by Chuck Patterson. John Coogan gave the invocation. Our guests today were Veterans from Kenmore’s American Legion Post, Ted Balbierz, Wayne Baumgartner, Carl Marranca, Mike Walsh and Jack O’Conner from the Veterans Court.
Tom’s first order of business was to vote on our slate of officers. Bob Blatz will be the President Elect. The motion carried unanimously. Thank you Rotarians for your efforts to run our club.
Our first announcement is that the wine committee will meet again shortly. I mentioned that Gretchen and I will not be able to host the gift basket gathering party this year. The girls are graduating college then, both on the same day but different schools. Awkward. Audrey asked if anyone might be able to host.
Tom met with the Kenmore Sun, a local newspaper to invite into our meetings and perhaps post some of our programs. They are interested. Dick H asked us to follow our Facebook page. “Like”,“Share” and “Comment” are great ways to boost our awareness. Larry gave Ted P an envelope with $1750 worth of dead presidents from the proceeds of the Purple Pinky event the high school Interact ran. Larry received a nice ovation. Remember Rotary International matches that and the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation doubles RI’s.
Our fine master Paul Chisolm started out by fining himself for a bad topic last week. This week he quizzed us on Rotary news. We knew a lot but he had many follow ups in his arsenal to eventually raise some money.
Art won the split club and Dick missed the Ace of Spades.
Today, we were able to present our Veterans money from gifts to Kenmore Charities in honor of Harold White. The Braunshidle requested and received $2000. Commander Ted Balbierz accepted this gift. He explained this gift will go to computers that are desperately needed.
Jack O’Conner, representing The Veteran’s Court, received $1500. Jack gave an overview of the Veterans Court. What started here in Judge Russel’s chambers is now a model for several hundred Courts that help give our Veterans a second chance. It is the least we can do. Many enthusiastic questions to follow.
Meeting adjourned.
The Ken January 22
1/22/2018 The Ken

Attendance: Audrey Meyers
Split Club:  Chuck Patterson
Invocation: John Coogan
Fine Master: Paul Chisholm
The Ken: Donna DiFrancesco

Mike Austin filled in for Tom, and led us in the Pledge, followed by an off-key rendition of  God Bless America led by Chuck. Guests today were our speaker, Amy Moritz, Buffalo News sportswriter/athlete, Dawn Kane a friend of Mike Austin's, Jerry from The Delaware and Ted's new colleague, Kathy .

Mike asked for announcements and Dawn announced the wine committee had their first meeting on Jan. 16. The Wine Tasting will be held on May 9 at Banchetti's Restaurant again. Discussions were held on the basket gathering party, contributions of baskets by club members, along with donations of bottles of wine for the wine refrigerator. There may be a few additions to this year's tasting. Stay tuned. Dawn also announced an open house at the old Roosevelt School (now Stanley G Falk School) on Thursday from 5-7. It has been converted into a special education school. If you plan on attending, tell them you're a guest of Dawn's. Larry made an announcement about the Purple Pinky dates, 23rd and 24th, at area schools. Several Rotarians have already volunteered but he could use more. He explained to our guests what this project is all about and how successful Kenmore Rotary has been with raising money.  Last year we collected $2,000 over 2 days. Let's do better this year. Thank you, Larry, for all your time and effort! Rick will present some foundation checks next week. He is waiting on some responses.

Paul took to the podium to access fines. Larry confessed to being out to dinner with Char at the Buffalo Roadhouse and seeing Ted and Janell. Larry proceeded to get Ted's attention by lobbing peanuts at him. Mike Ford confessed to Channel 7 being at Elderwood regarding flu prevention. No further confessions so Paul proceeded to quiz the group on January facts. Those who were already on Larry's list of volunteers for Purple Pinky were exempt. Whew! We found out that the creation of the CIA was on January 22, 1946, and that the famous Roe v. Wade was in January of 1973. One more week as Finemaster for Paul!

Mike announced our speaker, Amy Moritz, who has been a sportswriter for 20 years and at the Buffalo News for 18 of those. She got into sports not through playing them herself, although she tried as a middle schooler, but because of the love of sports by her mother and grandmother. Even though she didn't make it as a young athlete, she still had the desire in her early 30s, so she went on to participate in triathlons, even though she didn't know how to swim. Her first one was in 2008. She has since written a book, "I Thought You'd Be Faster: The Quest To Become An Athlete". She was very upbeat and a pleasure to listen to. Her charity of choice is Carolyn's House, a housing and homeless shelter in NIagara Falls. Another great speaker! Meeting adjourned.

Attendance: Audrey Meyers
Split Club: Rene Rebmann
Invocation: Dick Hanaburgh
Fine master:  Paul Chisolm
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
Tom began our first 2018 meeting with the pledge followed by a nice rendition of “America” led off by Chuck Patterson. Guests today were our speakers from Kevin Guest House, Pam Chrzanowski and Kate Heidinger. And last time as a guest, new member Joe Suppa.
Tom announced there will be no meeting next week in honor of Martin Luther King Holiday. Harold White’s service is Thursday at 11:00 at Deerhurst Presbyterian Church. We are sending a card to Barb and a card to Harold’s family. Truly a grand Rotarian who will be missed. Audrey announced that Dawn Mirand has agreed to chair this year’s Wine Tasting Event. This is one of our largest events so stay tuned and contribute. Thank you Dawn for your leadership and thank you Audrey for a job well done. Larry would like some help for our Purple Pinky event 1/23 and 1/24. An email with the details has been sent out.
With no further announcements, Paul took the floor to access fines. Joe Suppa confessed to beating me in racquetball after I pledged to take him at the last meeting. Ed M. confessed to writing a check for lunch today drawn from a bank neither of our illustrious bankers, both who were working the table, were affiliated with. Probably from the Bank of Armenia. Paul quizzed us on Buffalo Bills trivia since their inception. Fun questions and we raised some money.
Bob Blatz won the split club and Joe Suppa drew the 2 of spades, 1 off.
Ted Purvis introduced our speakers from Kevin Guest House, Pam Chrzanowski and Kate Heidinger. Kevin Guest House is the first independent healthcare hospitality house in America and has served as a model for more than 600 houses across the county, including the very first Ronald McDonald House. Their mission is to provide a comfortable and supportive home away from home for patients and their families. Pam explained their new marketing campaign “Who is Kevin” is underway. Kate gave details on the day to day operations at KGH. They thanked us for the money we donated and that it went to a security system. Kate and Pam mentioned it would be a great help if we could make dinner at the facilities some time for the guests. We had a positive conversation about this and it appears we will get board approval to do it. Great inspirational program.
Meeting adjourned.

Split Club: Dick Hanaburgh
Invocation: Chuck Patterson
Fine master:  Audrey Meyers

Tom began our meeting with the Pledge followed by God Bless America led by Chuck P. Chuck also gave our invocation. He asked that we keep Harold’s family in our thoughts with his passing. The only guest was Joe Suppa who will be our newest member next time we meet.
Tom announced that we will keep you informed on the details of Harold’s service later in January. Rick reminded us that we can make contributions to our foundation in Harold’s name. Kenmore Rotary Foundations or Kenmore Rotary Charities Inc. for the fund to go to Kenmore Rotary.
Tom is pleased to say that 90 families were helped this Christmas season with our involvement in the Town’s Fire Departments Operation Santa. It was a joint venture where we benefited by acquiring names of families that genuinely needed support. Rick Graham asked a good question regarding the contribution we get every year from a person who, several years back, benefited with our program. And yes, this individual still contributed. Tom reminded us that we will not meet again until January 8. Larry and the Interact club of Kenmore East and West could use some help January 25 and 26 around lunch time for the purple pinky program.
At this time Audrey took over as fine master. She removed her jacket that was zipped up to the neck and revealed a Buffalo Bills Jersey to show her appreciation for a great game Sunday. Sue J. was also in Bills attire. Audrey was a tad concerned that her fines were a bit much last week so she fined herself $20 for Chis being named poker player of the year. Immediately, new member to be, Joe Suppa, pounced asking to sell her a new house. Mike Ford had 2 confessions. First to thank Mike Austin for taking him to the Hockey game. Mike A. complained he tore a hamstring jumping up and down for the 4 goals we got. Mike F. also wanted to report that his mother’s house caught fire over the week end. No one was injured but we can only imagine the mess she’s in. No fine to Mike F but $1 per goal to Mike A. Ron Levea confessed to buying a Tyrod Taylor autographed mini helmet. I confessed that this afternoon I was finally going to beat Joe Suppa in racquetball. Well, that didn’t happen. In admiration for Chris’s skills in his profession, Audrey quizzed us on poker trivia. Surprisingly, the group knew a lot. Congrats to Chris.
Bob Blatz won the split club, Art missed the Ace. But Art did win an auxiliary raffle item presented by Phil Michalowski. It was small and beautifully wrapped. Only could imagine what was inside. Art, please share. Thank you Phil.
Our speaker was tied up in a Town emergency so Tom had an opened meeting.  Tom said we couldn’t have elections because of a lack of board members. Tom assured us that this is being resolved. We do need a secretary. There was some discussions in the room from members contemplating. One in particular was Pat Griffin. Probably prompted by the awkward moment of silence following the request for help. Tom also asked that we be prompt with paying our dues. It helps our cash flow. Rick asked about the status of the Salvation Army’s membership. Bryden is still current but is being trained and has a rough time getting to the meetings.
With no further business to the good of Rotary, meeting adjourned.

Tom began our meeting to another full house in usual fashion. We gave our Pledge and Chuck led us in an awful rendition of “God Bless America”. It wasn’t subtly awful, it was extreme awful. Jovi patrons on the other side actually grabbed their children and ran out.
Guests today were, Joe Suppa, a potential new member. Dawn’s brought Lou Anne Voght and Todd Potter. And our speakers, Evelynn Kessler and Adriane Garr.
Tom announced that the Christmas party was a success. He thanked all who took a family for Operation Santa. Please get Tom the gifts by Wednesday 12/13/17 so he can disperse them. Tom thanked Audrey for creating the donation envelopes disguised as Christmas cards. They were successful. We came up a little short on the auction so the donations are very helpful. There were cards at our tables today. Please see if you can help out. You can donate in honor of someone else. Ted blew Audrey in and said she made a donation in Larry’s name.
Larry gave an update on Harold Whites progress. Harold is at Millard Fillmore Suburban for tests. He’s having a bit of a rough time so please keep him in our thoughts. Larry informed us that RYLA dates for 2018 are June 11 – June 17. You have to be between 19 and 26 years old. Applications are on our website.
Sue Jandzinski bragged that once again, Kenmore Mercy Hospital was voted #1 local Hospital of the year by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit hospital watchdog organization.
With no further announcements, Tom asked Audrey to access fines. Audrey asked for the Rotarian woman to come up and with score cards, levy the appropriate amounts. Mike Hettler confessed to his daughter’s wedding. John Cogan informed the panel of judges that he had to go to Florida. Pat Griffin attended the Army / Navy football game. Rick Graham was fined because he made Joanie go to the Christmas Party not feeling well. They assessed anyone who did not attend the Christmas Party $1. With council from Mike Hettler, Audrey fined President Tom for his feelings towards Tyrod. Gary tadled on Larry. Evidently, Larry won a nice raffle, in which he gave lots back to the organization. Audrey then hammered us on details about our female Rotarians. Quit an impressive group. All in all it looked like a nice haul.
Dawn won the split club and Dick missed the Ace.
Holly introduced Evelynn Kessler and Adriane Garr of International Child Advancement (www.childadvancement.org). Both women work at M&T bank. Adriane was the only sibling of 6 that was born in the US. Her family is from the Congo. Her dad attended college in the United States. After graduation, he went back to the Congo. In order for Adriane to have a proper education, she had to leave the Congo and her family behind. She moved to France and stayed with an uncle and eventually made it to the US. She was educated here, hired by M&T and in 2011 started International Child Advancement. IAC’s goal is to empower disadvantaged children through education. Livelihood provision, vocational training and mentoring. This was a very interesting program.

Tom began our lightly attended meeting with the Pledge. He waived the song but asked for a moment of silence for all our Veterans.
Our guests today were our speaker Molly Dryer and others who came to hear her program. They were Tony Billoni from BNMC Rotary Club, Dan Halin – UB Rotaract, and Erin Moscoti with UB Sustainability program.
Tom thanked Larry and Phil for their service with the Veterans over the weekend. They visited and spent time with 3 Veterans. Tom asked us to check our email. He has sent out through google drive, signups for our Christmas Party auction items. There was also a signup sheet at the sign in table for reservations to the party. Larry received an email regarding the Rotary leadership convention. Our club pays for you if you are interested in Attending. Please see Larry for the details. Dick announced that Shred-It netted $5580. Great job.
Dick made his debuted as fine master today. Larry confessed to his battery on his fob died so he couldn’t get into his car while visiting the Veterans. Needless to say he stayed with one Vet so long until they got this straightened out the guy was afraid he wouldn’t be able get rid of Larry. Rene for leaving last week’s meeting early. Dick went table to table questioning us on Dave Andrychuck trivia in honor of Dave’s indictment into the hockey Hall of Fame over the week end.
Ron won the split club and Joe missed the Ace. Go figure 2 guys at the head table pulling their own names? I’d like an audit.
At this time, Larry introduce Molly Dryer. Molly was at UB and was involved in the Rotaract program there. Molly has a vision of restoring and revitalizing the eco system of LaSalle Lake at the UB North Campus. Her specialty is sustainability. Molly gave a real neat explanation of the natural order lakes should have to eliminate erosion. So much dominoes off good sustainability. We had a slide show showing the awful erosion on the windward side of the lake. Eventually, without any attention there will be problems. Molly’s project started out as her senior Thesis and is now gaining momentum. She is asking for any contributions of money and efforts to plant trees and shrubs. This was taken quite favorably at today’s meeting. I’m sure we will participate.
Greta program.

Tom began our meeting to another full house in usual fashion. We waived the song and Gary gave a very nice impromptu invocation. Rene introduced Bob Ardus (SP). Bob is our nominee for our District Governor. Holly introduced Ann Marie Orlowski from Cradle Beach.
Audrey announced that Buffalo Sunrise was having an event at SoHo about Puerto Rico Monday from 6:30-9:30. It would be nice to hear what they have to report. Tom will have a signup sheet at next meeting for the Christmas Party 12/1 at Park Country Club. Tom is going to be vigilant in getting nice auction items. A dinner and an event always get lots of action. Rick Graham reminded us that we have 3 weeks to distributing our grants. There are not many organization requesting our help. Our guest Bob Ardus pitched Rochester Rotary Clubs 92 Eastern Cities Fellowship dinner December 6 at 5:00-8:30. Go to www.rochesterrotary.org for the details. Larry announced the deadline for reservation to a Dan Wiles Party is coming up. Contact Larry for the details. Larry also added a neat event coming to The Elm Street Bakery in East Aurora 11/16 showcasing Crossroads Springs. An organization we are familiar with that provide scholarships to orphans in Kenya for post and secondary education.
Art Trevor stepped up as fine master. John was fined for sucking up to Art. Tim and Jackie attended the Roswell event recognizing the 11 days of Hockey fund raiser that went on earlier this year. They raised $1 million and also saw Julie and past president Keith Waldron. Mike Ford for not being prepared. Art asked Audrey to levy his fine. Gary confessed but was not fined that he spoke to Dr. Werner. Doc says hello and is doing well. Mike Hettler confessed that son Brian presented to the Columbian officials for a National Geographic event on ingenious people. Again no fine. Joe Arcara told us about Therese’s trip to Israel where she rode on a camel. Joe, aren’t there camels in Italy. Larry paid for missing Shred-It and the district Conference but did send Interact students in his place. Paul was fined for something private. Joe was fined for talking business. Audrey missed 4 meetings so Art asked Mike Ford to suggest the fine. Let’s just say it was not in balance to Audrey’s fine for Mike. Art asked the tables about our Rotary Club politics. We had fun and raised a little money.
John Coogan picked his own number for the split club and Dick missed the Ace,
Holly introduced Anne Marie Orlowski. Anne Marie is the CEO of Cradle Beach. We all know Cradle Beach. It is one of our hands on events where we put on a carnival for the kids every year. Cradle Beach provides hope, opportunities, and life changing experiences for children with special needs and children who are economically disadvantaged to help them reach their full potential. Another dynamic speaker.

Tom began our meeting to another full house in usual fashion. We gave our Pledge but had no song. Ed H. gave our invocation. Our only quest today was our speaker Marisa Wigglesworth of the Buffalo Society of Natural Science aka The Science Museum. To welcomed back Joe Starck. Joe has been back a couple of weeks but it’s just great to have in attendance. Tom even waived all fines for Joe. Tom thanked the Shred-It committee and everyone who showed up to help out in the in climate weather. Preliminary figures have us netting $6700. Tom went out on the limb by singling out Phil, Ed M., Ron, Pat, Holly, Audrey, Joe A. and John Coogan as stalwarts of the day. He probably missed someone and is sorry, but wanted these folks recognized. Even Paul C loaded a box. Dick H. also thanked everyone and is looking forward the next event. I hope I am not the only one noticing the enthusiasm and the willingness of Dick Hanaburgh’s participation in our club. Thanks buddy.
Tom reminded us about the open house at Brownshidles VFW post 11/5 from 1:00 – 5:00. Put together by the service clubs of the Ken – Ton area. Lastly, Tom asked us to be thinking about auction items for our Christmas Party 12/1 at PCC. He really wants to jump start our efforts. Rick Graham has 2 requests in for grants from our foundation. Anyone interested, please have them fill out an application from our website and submit 11/29.
Jim Logan took the stage as fine master. Jim thanked Paul for stepping for him last week. First anyone not at shred-It pay $2. Tim Glor with pride confessed that his nephew Jeff is the CBS anchor for prime time. Jeff is a former Kenmore East grad and RYLA participant. Wouldn’t it be great to have him speak? Phil presented Tom a package of box cutters for the next Shred-It. Rick Graham. Something about the weather. I confessed to spending all day Sunday splitting and stacking wood only wake up Monday and found it all fell into a pile. Gretchen and Jeffrey re stacked it while I was at work on Monday. Mike Ford played in a flag football game at New Era Stadium through Try-It Distributors. Sue J. thanked everyone for their kindness they displayed towards her 8 year old daughter at Shred-It. You really made her feel included. Finally, John Coogan was boasting about a golf tournament this summer where he won several prizes. Unbeknownst to John, his audience was to be our Finemaster. Jim continued with Halloween questions that most tables answered correctly.
Holly won our split club and Jim missed the Ace.
Today’s program was brought to us by Marisa Wigglesworth. President and CEO of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences and the Tift Nature preserve. Marisa is a diehard Flyers fan, growing up in Philadelphia. As a child she was always playing in the woods stimulating her love of science. She loves the direction the Society is going within our community. The Tift Nature preserve was a brownfield turned into a bird and wildlife sanctuary. In the past, the Science Museum never really changed. It was always the same dead things behind glass. Now they are moving things around. About nine years ago the leaders of the Society committed to reopen and turn every exhibit into a Science Studio where things happen. They just opened Buffalo in Space. Next to open will be the Kellogg Observatory’s telescope. It will be completed in the spring of 2018. In conjunction with these, they will continually bring in the short term traveling exhibits. So keep your ear to the rail for all the exiting events happening at another one of Buffalos treasures. Marisa chose the Science Museum to donate our $50 to.

Tom was back today in front of a full house. We gave our Pledge and waived the song. Ed gave our invocation.
Today’s guests were Jim Millard and Walt Ludwig from Kenmore Mercy Hospital.  Chris Scaliso was also a guest. Larry passed around a Veterans Day card for Autumn Jenkins. Autumn was president of the Ken West Interact Club. She has helped Kenmore Rotary in the past in so many ways. Autumn has joined the Army.
Dick announced that Shred-It is all set for Saturday at 10:00. People do get there early so please show up about 9:45. Rick Graham asked if coffee and donuts were on the agenda. Pat will nudge Donna for this task, as if she doesn’t have enough to do. Larry has an Interact meeting after our meeting.  He’s going to see who will be able to help out. Pat brought in lawn signs. Tom summarized the Veteran’s email that went out advertising the VFW’s annual joint service club Thanksgiving Dinner that will be on Tuesday the 14th of November at the Grill at the Dome at 6:00 p.m. Cash bar from 6-6:30 p.m. Full turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a slice of pie at 6:30 p.m. Cost this year is $18.00 per person (checks payable to Grill at the Dome) and will be collected that night. I sense Tom’s pet projects are the Veterans programs and we should all try to support him.
Tom is also anxious to upgrade the Operation Santa auction items for our Christmas Party at PCC December 1. He will initiate a google doc for these events so we can all see who is in and what they can contribute. Lastly, Tom was sad to announce that Shari McDonough has sent in her letter of resignation. It goes without saying how much we will miss her enthusiasm and involvement. Bummer.
At this time, Paul Chisolm took over as fine master. Ted P confessed to watching Notre Dame beat up on USC in South Bend, Indiana. Mike Ford had his family in town and had a great time at the Bill’s game. Gary was fined for throwing Sue J under the bus. Ed M was fined for commenting on Paul’s tie. Paul quizzed us on Kenmore Mercy Hospital facts and fined anyone who did not sign up for Shred-It.
Ed Markarian won the split club, pulled his number again and re pulled Art’s chance at the Ace. No luck. Kenmore Mercy Hospital raffled off 2 nice fleece jackets that went so fast I didn’t get who won them. Thank you KMH.
Susan Jandzinski introduced Jim Millard, President and CEO of KMH. Jim touched on the good news and bad news for the hospital. First the bad news, There is a lot of uncertainty in Health care these days. Hospitals continue to close. Access to good physicians is a real challenge. For some reason, we cannot pay them as much as they can be paid in other communities. Even Rochester and Syracuse can pay much more. Peculiar. Margins for Hospitals are extremely thin (2%). Lots of bureaucracy, 900 pieces of data for Medicare requirements alone. And they must be prepared for mass casualties. The good news is KMH is well prepared going forward. They are very solvent. 34 k visitors to the emergency room compared to 2K years ago. KMH has invested in large capital equipment: MRI machine, Macro Robotic surgery for orthopedics and others. They have won many Quality and Service awards. ICU unit is specially trained for around the clock care. Won a stroke care National award. Ranked highest satisfaction in WNY.
Jim introduced Walt Ludwig who will take over for Jim at the end of the year when Jim retires. Jim threw us a curve ball, he chose the Boys and Girls club as his charity for us to donate to in honor of him presenting to us.

Mike Austin stood in to run today’s meeting. We gave our Pledge, Chuck led us in singing “America the Beautiful” and Ed H. gave our invocation and asked us to keep the people of California suffering with the wildfires in our hearts.
Guests today were our Speaker, Susan Evans, her husband, who could not get a word in to even get his name and Damon’s colleque Christopher Scalisi.
Mike recognize a couple of Rotarians missing in action. Audrey, Bill Brucker and especially to see Joe Starck up and about. Dick H. was holding the last Shred-It meeting after this meeting. Mostly on track. Shred – it still has the date wrong on their web site. But we are ready to go for Saturday. The weather is supposed to be good. Please come and help out. Ed had another announcement regarding a Boy Scout event but I didn’t get it. Please shoot me an email with any events your organizations are holding so I get the details correct. Daman was sponsoring an interesting event at his office this Thursday. Wall Art and Jazz. A special email went out with the details. Mike Austin pitched an open house at Journeys End for Thursday Oct. 26. From 5 – 7. That’s at 2495 Main Street Suite 530. Rick Graham reminded us to spread the word to organizations that could use a grant from us. Applications are on our website and are due in 11/30/17.
Jim Logan was the fine master today. Tim Glor confessed to being on his honeymoon in Paris and up the Rhone River. Mike A vacationed in California. Jim fined Kenmore East alum for their loss to Ken West. Also, if you did not attend the Greycliff Conservatory tour on Saturday. Jim said it was very nice. Paul was fined for having a pie delivered to his table. As it turned out it was cheesecake. With much debate, deliberation and googling, Paul still paid. Gary was fined for something pertaining to his Harvey Weinstein impression. Jim asked several Frank Lloyd Wright trivia questions. There was no change for my fine so I felt compelled to quote from the book “Living in a Frank Lloyd Wright House”.. One of his customers called complaining the roof on their new house was leaking right over her desk. His reply was to move the desk.
Mike Ford won the 50 / 50 and Sue J missed the Ace.
Mike Ford introduced Susan Evans. Susan first apologized for being a die heart Steelers fan. A retired English teacher, Susan did not need the microphone. She wandered the room and captured us all with her story of being diagnosed, being treated and eventually beating Ovarian Cancer. She is the author of the book “Don’t Write the Obituary Yet”. A truly wonderful person.
Meeting adjourned.

Tom began our open meeting brain storming Operation Santa. This has been near and dear to us for many years. Started by Joe Starck. It has been weak lately. There was healthy discussion to re-energize it. Perhaps earlier requests for families. Trying to get the major auction items back again. It was a healthy discussion.
Rick Graham took over to discuss our Foundation. Its current value is $766,618, with last year’s return of 11.25%. Last year’s beneficiaries were: Ken-Ton closet, $2860 for 4 cabinets, Gerard Place $5592 for 2 AED machines, Schofield Residence, $6K towards a new welcome center, Buffalo Zoo, $5K toward the reptile house development, Elmlawn Cemetery, $5K toward rehab of the Chapel and Riviera Theater, $4K for their efforts. This was very generous of Jim. Gary is planning another club function at Greycliff Saturday 11/30 at 3:00. By the show of hands, it looks like this will a well-attended event.
Fine master Mike Ford came up to impose fines. Donna first confessed to being a grandma soon. JoJo Coogan had a surprise 60th birthday party for John. John also paid happy dollars that his condo in FLA was not damaged. I was fined for shushing Ted when he tried interrupting us while we were engaged in an intense conversation. Joe Arcara won the Split Club and Ted missed the Ace of Spades.
At this time, Tom asked Larry to introduce Reg Madison.  Reg had a dynamic command of the floor. Born in Alberta, moved to Ontario. He was active in broadcasting and financial services. Coached hockey and baseball. A 3 times Paul Harris recipient. His accolades go and on. Reg joined the Brantford Sunrise club in 2003 and 14 years later is our District Governor. Reg reminded us of the awards that are available to us. They are the Rotary Citation. Only 16 out of the 67 District clubs submitted for this. Lighthouse award, only a few get and Governors trophy, only the top goal setters receive. Reg really wants to help us support RI Goals. 1. Support and Strengthen clubs. 2. Increase Humanitarian services and 3. Enhance Rotary’s public image. Most people do not know we helped eradicate Polio. Finally, Reg would love to get many of us to attend the District Conference. It is at the 5 star resort, White Oaks Resort and Spa. We’ll get great exchange on the UIS dollar. It is surrounded by world class golf and wineries. And there are wonderful speakers and programs. The dates are October 27-29. This guy was great to hear. Sorry to those that missed out.

The meeting started at 12:40 with the pledge and singing of God Bless America, led by Barb. Rick paid tribute to the 911 victims and to all who suffered through the hurricanes. Our only guest was our speaker, Tim Callan from the Town of Tonawanda Planning & Development Department.  Tom thanked all who attended the Moondance Catamaran social. It was another fun evening. He announced there will be a Shred-It meeting after the regular meeting today, and asked that all involved please stay after. October 14 is tentatively scheduled as our next social gathering for a tour of Graycliff and dinner afterward. More on this to follow. Tom asked for announcements. I brought in the mailer from Schofield Residence, and on the cover was a picture of Ed Gray, Administrator, and our own Tom and Rick. They were there for the dedication ceremony of the new Welcome Center at Schofield, made possible in part by our donation. Looking good, guys! Rick announced he had an invitation to the Donor Appreciation Night at the Buffalo Zoo on September 21 from 6-8 p.m. He is unable to attend, so if anyone would like to go, please contact either Rick or Paul. RSVP's must be in by September 15. Also, he announced something to do with the Foundation, happening on October 2, but I didn't catch it. Sorry.  Chuck has a flier from NSDAR regarding a Jazz Series. If interested, see him.
Ron visited with Mark Mondanaro and he is recovering well after his fall. Good to hear! Mike was called up to levy the fines. First order of business was Gary's announcement that Tom showed excessive PDA on the Moondance. Phill even had pictures on his phone as proof. Gary kindly paid the fine. Art chimed in that he wanted to pay a happy fine of $10 because he was glad to see that Tom's date was female. Wow! Fines were levied for no pin, no name tag and not going on the Moondance. There was one trivia question put before the group, which was what was the average score of all 13 football games played on Sunday. We had to pick a winning and losing score. Winning score was right on, and we were off by a couple on the losing end. We all paid the fine. Our speaker drew Dick's number for the split club AND for the Ace of Spades. He didn't win for the Ace. Tom announced our speaker, Tim Callan, who presented on Solarize Tonawanda. Tim first thanked the Rotary because in 1994 he was chosen for Rotary's Ambassadorial Scholar Program and traveled to Australia. It's an opportunity he is forever grateful for and wanted us all to know how thankful he is. He then presented his program, which is called Solarize Tonawanda. It's a clean energy community program for residential only homes to sign up to have solar panels installed. They are working with 2 companies who install the panels and they will come out and give you a free estimate. This program runs until November 24. You can find out more on the website www.solarizetonawanda.org. Very informative program. Tom announced that at the next meeting we will be visited by District Governor Reg. The board meeting will be held ahead of the regular meeting at Jovi's at 11 a.m.  Meeting adjourned.

Tim sold his building and is in semi-retirement phase. Tim you worked so hard all these years, it’s great to see this. You deserve it. Jim Logan was away for 2 weeks on an Alaskan last journey cruise. Jim advised us, if we were to do this take it in July rather than August. It rained every blanety blank day. Ted Purvis mentioned his brother-in-law is fine in Austin TX. Why shouldn’t he be, Austin is 200 miles west of Houston. Pat Griffin gambled with a rubber ducky at the Buffalo Rotary Rubber Ducky race at canal side. Pat is easily amused. Dawn’s daughter got engaged this week. Also, Dawn accepted a part time associate faculty position at Bryant and Stratton. Dawn was involved with some other events but I missed them. Mike Ford got a new car. Ed and I were fined for no name tags.
John Coogan won the split club and Dawn missed the Ace of spades.

Mark explained that the symptoms of a heart attack is different between men and women. For men it is like an elephant is on your chest, with woman, it can be as simple as an achy jaw. More woman suffer heart attacks than men. Only 20% is hereditary. The rest is healthy living and diet. Sodium is a real factor. Phil walked us through the process and passed around some of the molds and casts he works on.  He discussed how 3D printing is changing his industry and work, creating a new realm of possibilities.
Everything is recycled and sent back to the refinery, he created a low environment footprint and only has a bag or two or garbage every other week.
Thank you Phil and Welcome to the Club!!

Coal is shipped in to the plant, placed in Coke ovens, to be purified, and used to make steal. Coke was fined for environmental laws (Clean Air & Clean Water).  The trial and investigations found that people living in the vicinity of the plant head higher rates of developing cancer and in some cases cancer’s that were rare. Coke was tried and convicted for violating environmental laws.  This was the first case when someone actually went to jail for violating the Clean Air Act. In addition, Coke was required to spend 12MM for cleanup studies. Matthew and his team are working closely with the affected areas to obtain soil samples for the studies. The primary concern is to minimize impact on the residents. Soil samples are collected and sent to ALS an environment testing company in Rochester. Soil testing sites are confidential.  There is a community meeting schedule for 7/26/2017 in the community room at 3200 Elmwood Ave. Any homeowner/landowner can volunteer to have their soil tested.  Soils will be collected beginning 8/7/17 and will last for a period of 10-15 days.  The data collected and results of the testing will be shared with the property owners. Dan Wiles made an announcement on behalf of all the service clubs of Kenmore and Tonawanda. It’s that time of year again where we raise money for the paramedics by offering a chance to win $25,000. As golfers come up to the 8th hole par 3 at Sheridan Park, we ask for a $5 chance to get within 20’ of the pin. If they get on the green they receive a sleeve of balls with our clubs name and logo on it. If they are inside 20’, they are invited back for a try on the same hole to get a hole in one. We raise about $2k per year. A signup sheet has been circulating and we are close to having our Kenmore Rotary day (Monday) complete.
Fine master Ted P. came up to hear confessions and levy fines. I gave my $25 bid for bread at our last meeting. Rene is still making installments on hers. Barb Henry had cataract surgery on her left eye that went real well. Barb, I though you had a wincoln not cataract. Mike Ford has a friend in town from Hawaii and therefor watched the fireworks from the other side of the fence from his pales in Rotary. Evidently Mike needed to keep his world separate. Mike is also going on a vacation with the outlaws and something about playing football and a tournament…. Eddie took son Billie to Cleveland for a U2 concert. Ed was certain Billie was the youngest one in the crowd. Larry missed a few weeks with traveling and RYLA. Joe Arcara was going Boston to watch the Red Sox and the Yankees. There were no more fines, but Ted thanked Art for all he has done as treasurer over the last years.
Tim Glor won the split club and Art missed the Ace.
Tom took over the meeting and laid the groundwork he has set for his year as president. The theme this year is “Make a difference”. Tom wants to increase membership from 47 or 48 to 55. He feels more social events and interesting meetings should help. Tom wants to start on a project to help the Veterans. His wish is to cross pollinate students in the Interact clubs with us and the VA drug court. Tom wants to present Vets with flowers on Memorial Day personally and lay flowers on the graves of Vets on Labor Day. To show our appreciation for their service.
Good luck Tom and you know you can count on all of us for your support.

Mike began his last meeting as President with an enthusiastic gong. We gave our Pledge and Chuck led us in “God Bless America”. Tom asked if we might be able to sing a tad better as his term is about to start. The general consensus was that this is probably the best it gets. Mike asked Ron for guests today. Ron squirmed a little and I know why. Nancy Chisolm and son Carl were in attendance and Ron did not want to spoil the surprise that was going to unfold later in the meeting. But Ron was able to greet Ben Burk.
Today’s first announcement was from Gary. The July 3rd fireworks party is all set. I will send a general email with the parking pass you will need to enter Elmlawn. Holly solicited Sunshine Day which is 8/16 at Cradle Beach. Signup sheets will be at the attendance desk for the next few meetings. Tom Lang wants to meet with the program committee after today’s meeting.
Bob Blatz won the split club and Nancy missed the Ace of Spades. Brian Ahern made 2 loaves of bread that Gary raffled off. The winners were yours truly and Rene.
Mike thanked Brian as this is his last meeting. He and Pat are moving to Boston. Please keep in touch. There haven’t been many new members that acclimated and helped the club as much as Brian and Pat. Thank you. Mike wanted to thank his board for helping him out this year. A special thanks to Art who will step down as treasurer. Mike also thanked Rene for, as Mike put it, a thankless job as secretary. Mike had many to thank for him and Debbie getting together. As they are coming up to a year since they met at Sunshine Day. I told you Mike, There is a lid for every pot.
Mike had the honor of inducting Paul Chisolm into the Paul Harris brotherhood. This award is presented to a Rotarian that particularly emanates what Rotary is all about. Paul has always been an impressive man for me to look up for his leadership and ability to be involved with so many good causes.
Tom Lang took the floor and introduced Phil Michalowski as our newest members. Please reach out to Phil and make him feel at home in his new organization.

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge followed by “God Bless America” that Chuck Patterson started. Guests today were Joe DiPaulo from Buffalo Rotary, Phil Michalowski (let this be Phil’s 2nd announcement for membership), Celia O’Brien and Gigi Grizanti of Western NY Veterans Housing Coalition (WNYVHC).

Announcements came from Joe Arcara. Joe is putting together the June BBQ aka Presidents and officers swearing in party this Monday at 6:00. It will be at Pat and Brian Ahern’s house again. The BBQ dinner is out of this world. $20.00 / person. Rain or shine. Let’s support our peeps. Tim plugged his and Jacquie’s near and dear project. Love Fest is combing with Ride for Roswell. Go to give.roswellpark.org and find the details to ride, party or just back Tim and Jacquie. Mike announced there is no meeting Monday in lieu of the BBQ and that there will be a board meeting Wednesday same place and time you all meet. Also, Mike confirmed Elmlawn will do the fireworks Monday July 3 again. Details to follow.

At this time Ted took the reins as Finemaster asking for confessions. Brian confessed there is a contract on his house all ready. That is no surprise and that is why I remind you to move you schedule around so that you can partake in this serine, Zen like arena for Monday’s BBQ. Paul’s picture was in the paper for attending the Memorial Day parade. Gary was behind Paul but got 2nd billing. Tim Glor mentioned that his nephew Jeff Glor with CBS news is working his way up the ranks as main anchor man. I was fined for mixing up the BBQ date that was in the body on the event invitation that no one reads anyways. However pay attention to the email blasts and I’ll send a new event out so there is no mistaking that the BBQ is Monday 6/12. The rest of Ted’s fines were a blur but out of the corner of the room came a very impressive dissertation responding to one of Teds questions about the gold standard. As it turns out it was Phil, our soon to be new member. Phil you are going to fit right in. Ted was able to raise money with some fun filled razing of the group. Nice job pale.

Jerry Gentile won the split club and Brian missed the Ace. Joe Acara and Jerry won Brian’s homemade white bread.

Paul introduced our speakers today. Celia O’Brien President and COO and Gigi Grizanti, VP of hosing & development of Western New York Veterans Housing Coalition. Both dynamic speakers describing the services WNYVHC provides. WNYVHC was founded in 1987 to provide housing for homeless veterans and Veterans with special needs. Another informative discussion.

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge followed by “God Bless America” that Chuck Patterson started us out but was soon overcome by our guest who sang with an operaesque rendition that made us really sound pretty god. Rick gave our invocation. Guests today were our speaker Melisa Forester and her husband, Michael.
First announcement was made by Mike on behalf of Larry. We still have an opening for RYLA June 19-25. Details are on our website. There will not be a meeting Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Joe Arcara is putting together the Presidents Party and installation of officers that will be held at Brian and Pat Ahern’s house June 12. By now you all received the email blast with the details. Damon was going to have a finance / audit meeting after today’s meeting. Mike Austin announced that there will be fireworks Monday July 3 at Elmlawn again.
Mike Ford was our fine master today. Mike focused right on Tom Lang and busted him for a Trump – like tie. Scott Mason was fined for suggesting that women pay double fines. Art was fined because Mike has been waiting for a pin since he joined. Brian paid happy dollars for purchasing a carpet a carpet from me that his dog soiled with tar earlier in the week. I wanted to pay the fine but Brian insisted. Mike quizzed us on strokes for stroke awareness month. We all got a lot out of this. Most important, get to a hospital right away.
Bob B won the split club and Art missed the Ace. No Bread today.
Paul introduced our speaker today, Melisa Foster. If you have noticed many nice flowers and neat things around Kenmore, you can thank this organization. They have been around for 10 years and have over 1,000 people over seeing our neighborhood. They put on many functions. Last was a dog show at Mang Park. Keep up the good work.

It was good to be back at home field. Mike began our meeting with the Pledge, followed by Chuck P. leading us in “God Bless America”. Rick Graham gave our invocation. Guests today were Phil Mikolowski, giving our club a test drive and our speaker from UB’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Tom Ulbrich.
Our first announcement was from Audrey. Audrey was beaming with the success of our Wine Tasting event. The preliminary audit has it as the best year yet. We netted about $15,500. Audrey thanked especially, Shari and Rick for the sponsorship success and Sue J. for the program book. Rumor has it Tom was a great MC.  John Coogan sponsored the band. Good music always adds to the success of any party. Great job Wine Event committee.
Oh, and here comes Larry. He’s lucky there was tenderloin left.
Mike thanked Tom for conducting our meeting last week and Brian is wondering if we have dates for the Presidents party. It sounds like he is willing to have it this year. For those that missed last years, Brian house is a wonderful setting for this party. The topic of the stocks came up. They are still at Brains house, which is ok. Brian and Pat have been together for a while and whatever. But, I am concerned what Tom’s potential suitors will think if they see those in his house.
We were pleased to have a rookie Fine Master today, Rene R. Rene, in Holly’s fashion, excused all the women from fines today. Rick Graham was first to confess that Joanie and his sister gave him grief for not winning any baskets, while Rick’s other guests cleaned up. Tom received and read a thank you card for MC-ing the Wine event, but I understand there was an undertone of disagreement on his judgement of professional quarterbacks. Mike confessed that Madison was able to attend a full day work shop at Shae’s for her role in Beauty and the Beast. Mark Tremont confessed to their 2nd grandchild born health and strong 7 weeks ago. Mark also shared his active travel schedule. Paul tadled on Jim Logan for winning a healthy raffle. Sue J. announced Kenmore Mercy opened and dedicated their new healing garden. Rene fined Larry for coming in late and Scott for strong arming sponsors. Rene quizzed us on football trivia. As it turned out, Rene, you’re a natural. Great job.
Ron won the split club and Bob pulled his name for the chance at the Ace but didn’t pull the Ace. Sue and Jerry won Brian’s bread.
Paul introduced Tom Ulbrich from UB’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL). The CEL recognizes and supports the power of entrepreneurship to unlock human potential, create jobs, inspire wealth and invigorate the greater Western NY economy and community. Tom’s topic today focused on the quickness of change in how we get and what we do with information. Many questions followed. We stayed a little over but no ne minded.

Mike began our meeting at the Paddock Golf Dome with a gong from an app on an iphone. We gave our Pledge. There was no song. Rick gave our invocation, paying tribute to the fine young men and woman we were fortunate to have with us today. As you know, our meeting today was to give scholarship money to several Ken-Ton High School students. Because of the presentations there were many guests.
Mike called on Shari to give an update on the Wine Event. However Shari had a just taken a bite of her lunch so she asked Eddie to chime in. Well he too was in the middle of a bite. He was able to thank Audrey, Shari, Sue and their great committee for this year’s event. It appears we will have a very successful event. We can still use about 10 more baskets and a few more bodies in the door. The Wine and Beer Tasting Event is May 10 at 6:30. Details are on our website.
One of our regular guests, Darcy France bragged about our Shred-It event. Scott beamed and mentioned the final audit is not complete with Art out of town, but we all know it was a record hall. Larry gave an update on the Slap Shot week end he just helped put together. Slap shot is a jump start for 15-18 year olds into the Rotary mentality and should lead to Interact and ultimately the RYLA program.
Jim Logan won the 50 / 50 and Eddie missed the Ace.
Mike asked Tom Schwob to come up and start the program. Tom thanked us for the money we were able to raise through our fund raisers for the scholarships we were about to present. The presentations were as follows:
St. Joe's Collegiate Inst.  Benjamin Galkiewicz,   Robert Scott, parents Deanna and Jerry Galkiewicz

Kenmore East - Taylor Nash,    Patrick Heyden, Principal, mother Melissa Esposito

Kenmore West - Paige Phillips,   Dan Charland, Asst. Principal,    Interact advisor: Darcy France,   parents Jeanne and David Phillips

Mount St. Mary Academy - Claire Rosenecker, Julie Wojick, Asst. Principal, parents Mary and Tom,

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge. Barb led us in “America” and Gary gave our invocation. Gary told us Pat Hoffman’s service will be at Roberts, Dengler on Delaware at 11:00 May 6.
Announcements first from a very enthusiastic Scott Mason who was delighted with the help and the outcome of Shred-It. At one point we had to turn people away because the trucks were full. There was a lot of modifying of procedures because of so many cars. Great job Scott this event is a success because of your stewardship. Initial audit brings this event to $9,332. Audrey also thanked us on our continued efforts on the Wine Event. We are at a record high for sponsorships. Audrey thanked Mark Tremont on filling our major auction item, the wine cooler, with wine. We still need baskets and names of attendees.  This event is May 10 at 6:00.
Mike reminded us that our next 2 meetings will be for student recognition. Remember it is at The Paddock Dome. We have a larger room this year. And by the way their food is wonderful so I’m sure we’ll get a great lunch. Barb in Larry’s absents, asked us to bring Shred-It lawn signs to the meeting so we do not lose track of them.  This roving reporter is going to be all over any of you who stumble into Jovi’s by mistake. There will be spies watching.
Gary was asked up to continue the Armenian Raffle from last week. We had 13 spots left. John Coogan, Gary signed you up for 2 tickets. Please settle up with the treasurer. BTW, you didn’t win. It killed Gary to announce that Rick Graham’s number was drawn. Evidently Gary caught wind of Ricks chiming up that Gary missed the first half of the raffle.
Before Finemaster Tom Lang came up, Mike felt it urgent to hack on him about his lawyerly attire. Many in the room thought Tom dressed as if he was in a barbershop quartet. Being that president Mike is exempt from fines, Tom just had to take it. Art was immediately fined for commenting on Tom’s shirt. Any person that volunteered at Shred-It was exempt also. I was fined for doing a crouching dragon yoga stretch in the lunch line. Tom, I was just lining up my internal organs to accept the fuel I was about to intake. Don’t you? Ron Levea confessed to listening to an Armenian poet on Saturday afternoon. I was fined again for reciting an Armenian poem from Omar Kham. “A loaf of bread, a bottle of wine and thou”. There is a picture that goes along with this poem. If you saw it you would take the bread and wine and leave thou. Joe Starck tried to bribe Tom with cookies. Today’s trivia we were quizzed on had to do with celebrities born on or died on April 24. Oh and then Pat had an overwhelming desire to thank Barb for her donation to the Christmas Party. Pat and Linda used Barb’s timesharing unit and had a blast.
George Allen won the split club and Dick missed the Ace. In Brian’s absence, we had no bread to raffle off.
Paul was not able to get a speaker for this meeting so he decided to get one of our new members to tell us about themselves. Today we were very fortunate to have our newest member, George Allen III speak to us. George is no stranger to Rotary. His grandfather and father were Rotarians. George has been in the construction Industry in every facet. He started out working at Elmlawn as so many of our youths do. He worked as a rugger for us for a while. George lived in Tucson and did home building.  He was a super intendant on many large construction projects you have seen in town. Savarino’s ECDC. 95 Ferry. JM Hayes’ project at Washington and Sinclair where they did a complete gut and remodel. As in many cases, the super intendant works 70 hours and is paid for 40 so George decided to hang his own shingle and open his home improvement company. He has the ability to do many of the phases himself and has aligned himself with all the better contractors that he is sure will uphold is high standards. George is licensed and insured. There are already several Rotarians employing George with projects. Welcome aboard George. I never met an Allen I didn’t like.

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge. Barb led us in “America” and Gary gave our invocation. Gary asked that we remember Pat Hoffman, past President Ed Hoffman’s wife who passed away. She was a lovely person. Guests today were Julia Fink and Patty Notara.

Rick announced we are looking good with the Wine Event. They are pleased with sponsorships but would like more baskets and attendance. Gary will do the Armenian raffle the next 2 weeks. You can buy $10 chances (# of chances are usually 50) for a chance to win a 42” TV. The money we raise helps us purchase the main auction item. This year it is a professional wine cooler filled with all kinds of wines.

Scott also is on track with Shred-It. He still can use volunteers. Remember, the spring shred-It brings out many more people so he can use the help. Brian is working the signup sheets. The date is April 22. Larry, announced as he walked in the door at 12:45, that he has lawn signs.

John Coogan received his check for drawing the Ace last week. John confessed to winning the NCAA basketball pool this week that made our check insurmountable. Nevertheless, congrats John. John always buys lots of tickets so I’m sure we are still ahead of him. Larry got real good exposure in the Town for the “Purple Pinky” program he put on. More to educated the public what it is all about. Thank you Mike Ford for participating. Also a director of youth somewhere asked Larry to speak about our RYLA program somewhere. I’m sure he did and did a great job doing it. Brian would like to host a bread making class to show us how he makes this mouthwatering bread.

Mike introduced his dad, Jim Austin as today’s Finemaster. Rick Graham confessed to his niece being on TV and his grandson was selected for the Ontario Hockey League out of 1200. They choose 300. Great accomplishment. Tim Glor announced that he and Jacquie had a wonderful time as Shari’s guest at the Boys and Girls Club event at Klienhans. Don’t we all miss Shari? Audrey and our accountants Joe, Ed and Ted? Mike was also there with Gary as his date. Mike arranged for a ride in case the evening didn’t go well. I guess it did and there was something mentioned about breakfast??? Paul confessed to a wonderful dinner at Ahearn’s with the Patterson’s. Jim proceeded to quiz us about April Fools history. We went around the room and whoever told a funny prank was exempt from fines. There were many funny pranks, but Rene’s was the best when her manager took clients out for lunch and she called the restaurant in advance and asked them to decline his card. Rene, you are so naughty.

Gary won the split club and Art missed the Ace of Spades on a new deck. Bob Blatz and Ron won the fig, anis bread.

At this time, Mike introduced our speaker Julia Fink. Julia is the owner of Welcome Buffalo magazine. This magazine is rarely read by WNY’ers because it is in Hotels. 93 to be exact. She started the magazine 31 years ago with 39 Hotels. Tourism is very important to our community. Over twelve million people vacation here a year. We offer world class restaurants, boutiques, events, theaters, and professional sports. Julia was kind enough to present us all with a hard copy of the magazine. Let me tell you, it’s no rag.

Larry closed the meeting by reminding us he and Brian desperately need volunteers for the Big Picture Mentoring Program. They would like 6 and would like to test the waters for the rest of the year. It hibernates through the summer. Then we will be ready to go for the ’17 – ’18 school year. 1 hour on Wednesdays at noon. You will meet with the same high school student every week. How can you not develop a relationship with an individual you otherwise would never have had a chance to?

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge. Barb led us in “God Bless America” and Larry gave our invocation. Funny thing, there were a lot of customers at my store when I got back after Rotary thanks to Larry’s kind words. There were many visitors today that included Christine Koch – Principal of Kenmore West and Big Picture, Anne Blenk – Big Picture coordinator, Chris Watson, Big Picture Internship coordinator, Melinda Roth Sanderson, NYS mentors with Lynn Marinelli and Nancy Mueller White, Harold’s daughter in law.
Rick Graham has us all real excited about perhaps beating the record of 2013 Wine Event‘s revenues. There are many sponsorships sold. We still need more baskets and seats sold. Please drop the baskets off with a brief description to Elmlawn. Scott is also on track with Shred-It. Please help Scot and volunteer for an hour. There is a signup sheet or contact Scott at smason@realtyusa.com. Pat brought in lawn signs. MandT bank has a large electronic sign advertising this event. Thank you Rene. Mike thanked me and Gretchen for hosting the gift gathering party. We love having this group at the house.
Jim Prichard was fine master today. Paul was pleasantly pleased that we had several varieties of pies at the gift gathering party that he matched dollar for dollar to anyone who admitted to having a piece of pie at the party. Jim fined Rick for interrupting.  Appropriately with all this giving back to the community that has been going on and with the Variety Club telethon just ending, Jim quizzed us on fun facts relating to Variety Club. We learned some neat trivia and raised some money.
Ron Levea won the split club and, yes, John Coogan picked the Ace, with many cards still in the deck I might add. Chuck Patterson won the first loaf of Brian’s bread and Jim Prichard won the second. FYI, half of my family prefers this bread thinly sliced and toasted the others like it thicker. Either way it sure makes mornings exciting.
At this time Larry introduced half of our program. As I am sorting this all out, it appears Brian’s wife Pat introduced Melinda Sanderson of NY mentoring (more on this later) to Brian. That got us thinking about the Big Picture Program. Big Picture is a very specialized High School in the Ken-Ton district. They are in their 5th year. There are 15 kids per grade 9-12 in the program.  All though these kids are self-motivated, they don’t feel comfortable in a large school setting. The students participate in core content classes 3 days per week and also learn in a real-world setting through internships 2 days per week. The internships provide valuable learning experiences for the students and help to identify avenues for students to pursue as a long term career.
This sequad into Brian introducing Melinda Sanderson who is with NYS mentoring. Children today spend on average 7 minutes alone time with an adult per week. In 1984 Mario Cuomo started this program and put his wife Matilda in charge. It ended in 1995. In January of 2015, Andrew Cuomo, in honor of his father, started this program back up. Mentees are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs. Mentees are 52% less likely to skip classes. Mentees are more trusting of their parents or guardians, and less likely to lie to them and feel more supported and less criticized by peers. Brian and Larry are aggressively trying to get 6 club members so that we can be mentors. They are shooting for Wednesday’s at noon. Let’s try it out soon and get familiar with it before summer recess. Any referrals. You do not need to be a Rotarian. Please contact Larry at 870-9721 or Brian Ahern at 847-372-3633.

Mike began our meeting with the Pledge. Chuck led us in “America” and Tim gave a warm invocation. Today’s guests were our speaker Meg Lauerman and Kevin Robinson visiting us from Key Bank.
Mike began our announcements by congratulating Mark Tremont on the birth of his granddaughter. Also, student recognition is May 1 and May 8 at Paddock Dome. I look forward to this because I get to see Tom Schwob who presents the awards to outstanding middle school and high school achievers. Rick Graham announced that sponsorships for the Wine / Beer Event are up slightly. 2013 we netted $13K, last year $11K. Keep selling tickets. We need a final count by May 5 for Branccetis. Saturday will be the basket gathering party at my house. 6:00 at 109 Henning Drive, Orchard Park, NY. We have food and beverage and yes Paul, pies. For those that cannot bring the baskets to my house, Mike will accept them at his office. Please write a brief description what the basket is. That helps the committee set up. The special auction item will be a wine cooler filled with a montage of nice wines. Scott said Shred - It is on track. April 22, 10:00 – 2:00.  Please volunteer to man (or woman… Holly)  the event. 9:30 set up. Brian will have a signup sheet to assure we have enough people. Spring Shred-It has a larger turnout due to tax season. Art teased Scott how much money Shred-It will make and Scott replied how awkward it was that the house accountant didn’t know. Lawn signs are on order and some other signs are already out. Brian begged Mike to please get the %!@% stocks out of his house. Brian, I admit, I feel the pain. I would not like that grueling looking appliance adorning my house.
Fine person, Holly took her inaugural task of fining us for accomplishments and or brags. Mike Ford confessed to brining his 5 year old son to Splash Lagoon and had to play interference so Mike’s wife wouldn’t hold him back from the rides. Mike trust me, feed her some cold medicine and take your son off. They usually don’t get hurt too bad. Mike A took Madison to Beauty and The Beast and reported it was a great performance. I confessed to being rushed to the ER for a shrimp reaction. No Shrimp Saturday. Holly waived fines for all the woman in the room in honor of National woman’s month. She proceeded to quiz us on women’s progress over the years and it’s real creepy how not so long ago, women had many challenges. Great first time fine mastering and it appear Holly raised a lot of money.
Split club was won by new member George Allen, WTG George. Dick H. missed the Ace and Paul C, Jerry G, Dick H, and Tom L won the 4 loaves of bread Brian made earlier in the day. Paul introduced our speaker Meg Lauerman. Meg is with Continental 1. This is a real small organization very actively lobbying local and National politicians on the essentials of tying Route 219 together. We need a North South Interstate. There appears to be great momentum with the current administration. Meg made so much sense on the validity of this argument. Please learn more at www.continental1.org.

President Elect Tom stepped up to the plate for Mike and began our meeting promptly with the Pledge followed with a fine rendition of “God Bless America” started off by Chuck Patterson. Tim gave our invocation.

Tom asked for announcements. I started off by reminding everyone that the gift gathering party is approaching quickly. It is at my house, Saturday April 1 at 6:00. Please email me, jeffmarkar@aol.com, or register on line so we have enough food. We are planning on sausages from around the world with all kinds of goodies. Scott announced Shred –It is well under way. All he needs are volunteers the day of the event. Larry announced that Greg Eminger from Amherst East is having a golf outing May 8. They are looking for sponsors and / or golfers. Yeah, like every other organization in WNY is. Glad we’re out of that arena. Larry is also asking if anyone can think of a student 15-18 years old that want to participate in slap shot, they can contact Larry. It is the last weekend in April. Larry and Char are so active in this wonderful event that can really shape a young person. Also, Larry has a mentoring program that he needs adult mentors for young people that do not have many competent adults in their lives. Please contact Larry for the details.

With no further announcements, fine master Ed Markarian proceeded to hear confessions. First of all, Ed will be missing next week so Holly will have her inaugural fine master duties. She assured us she will raise money. Ed was happy to confess that his daughter Kristen, who started her college career working to be a kindergarten teaches has just applied to law school. Best wishes Kristen, pops would be very proud. Art was fined for agitating Scott to boast about Shred-It. Ron confessed to being on his annual baseball training camp visit to Florida. Paul confessed to a great birthday dinner at Park and was presented a large pie. I’m not following this Paul and pie deal but I better make sure there will be pie at the party April 1. John Coogan confessed to missing our meeting last week because he forgot to adjust his clock. Bread aficionado, Brian announced that Pat is taking the Hospice job in Boston. We wish Pat all the best but are saddened to have a great Rotarian moving on. Susan jabbed Tom, for Audrey’s sake, about the re-signing of Tyrod Taylor. Mike Ford was also bummed out but not so much with the negotiated contract. And finally Pat confessed that Larry won a clock as a door prize at an event he attended. How appropriate. Eddie questioned us on interesting trivia on Lincoln Continentals seeing that President elect Tom just purchased one.

John Coogan won the split club and Pat Griffin missed the Ace and I won the sourdough, rye bread. Still warm I might ad.

Tom took back the meeting and introduced our speaker. Pasquale Maggiore pinched hit for Karen Sorrentino of UNYTS. UNYTS is western NY’s only organ, eye, tissue and community blood center. What they get stays in WNY. Pasquale’s message today concentrated on giving blood. They can always use more blood. Area hospitals use 60,000 units of blood per year. In addition to emergencies and lifesaving transplants, blood is needed on a regular basis for people with cancer, heart disease and leukemia. Premature babies and children needing surgery also require blood transfusions. To find a blood drive near you, please visit www.unyts.org and click GIVE BLOOD. Very eye opening program that inspired many questions.

Split Club: Jeff Markarian
Invocation: Tim Glor
Fine Master: Ed Markarian
The Ken: Jeff Markarian
We began our meeting with the Pledge followed by a much nicer rendition of “God Bless America” in the key of Chuck Patterson. Tim gave our invocation. Our only guest today was our speaker John Bradley of Alcott HR.
Mike announced that 5/1 and 5/8 will be student recognition Days. This is where we honor Junior High and High school students and present them with scholarship money. Most likely at the Paddock Dome. I announced that I will host the Gift gathering party this year at my house. April 1 at 6:00. Rick Graham reminded us not to wait too long to get us the gifts because there is a lot of logistics that go into putting them together.
Ed Markarian was the fine master and took confessions from Tom Lang. Tom received an outstanding service award for his work he does with the Riviera Theater. Tom was not fined but confessed to purchasing a fully loaded Lincoln. That was a finable offense. Brian confessed to not having bread today. His power was off. Scott was fined for a quote Art said he made, hacking on the wine event. Mike A. blew Art in for swearing. There was no fine, but was kind of creepy, that a room full of men except for Michalene, who had no part of the commotion, had a conversation about Gary Roberts’s lower lumbar. To wrap up, Eddie fined everyone without a pin on.
Michalene won the split club and Mike A. lost on the Ace. However no bread today.
Paul Chisolm introduced our speaker, John Bradley of Alcott HS. There was a caveat in having him speak to us today. We had to get permission from Holly. Holly had no problem and as it turns out, John said Holly is the best in her field and they would employ her on certain challenges. It was interesting again, figuring out all the regulations that is required from us. But he stressed as did Holly when she presented, you better. They will assume you are not in compliance and you have to prove you are. One regulation is the new hourly rate implemented this year for salaried employees. It’s a tangled web and you cannot do it yourself.  Alcott HS is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) in where they co hire the employees. You benefit with the purchasing power you gain in the numbers you bring.
John’s second part of his program dealt with Rotary Youth Exchange. He is very involved with that for our District. There is a misconception that we have to host the students wherein Rotary just mediates in putting the families together. This could be another form of community service for our club to think about.

Mike started out this large boisterous group on time with the Pledge and Chuck Patterson led us in “God Bless America”. We had 2 guests. Our speaker Mark Mistretta, Capital Facilities Manager of the New York State Parks and Bill Mikolowski from who knows where.
Mike announced the board was meeting Wednesday at Platka’s at 8:15 am. Rick Graham reminded us we need baskets for the Wine Event. Please remember to describe them so we can make placards. I am hosting a basket gathering party April 1 at 6:00. If you cannot attend, you can get the baskets to Elmlawn. Sue J. announced that Shari will attend the event??? Gary Roberts will be doing the Armenian Raffle soon. This is where we raise money to buy a gift to raffle off at the Event. You buy chances, usually 1-50 for a set price. Gary will draw a number and you will when a prize. This usually takes place over 2 weekly meetings. Art announced that Scot called him and asked that he wishes us luck on the 2nd biggest fund raiser we have. Of course this was met with some debate. Tom Lang thanked the 15 people who attended the Wine Tour Sunday. They were even greeted at one of the wineries by a former RYLARIAN who know Larry and Char.
Eddie was the fine master for the week. The first fine was from Dr. Werner. Doc’s first meeting was February 7, 1957. This February 7, 2017 Venice Sunrise Club was honored to have him share his 60th year of perfect attendance. He mentioned he has a wager going on with a Rotarian at his new but 2nd favorite club who has 61 years of perfect attendance. Doc gave 60 happy dollars for 60 years of perfect attendance.  Ed took many other confessions. But started by fining himself for poor attendance. Rick was fined for tatteltaling. George Allen was fined just so his sponsor Ed could give him his first fine. Tom paid it. Jim P has been getting many spots on the Entecom stations suggesting Entecom for advertising. Gary was fined for being an Armenian wanna be. Art confessed to being on a 2 week cruise. Mike Ford had to miss the wine tour due to a fund raiser for Susan’s cousin. He was moved by the large donation Chuckie Basil contributed. Pat Griffin paid for doing junior achievements. Brian Ahern attended Amherst rotary meeting and the Rotarian that visited our club and made us aware of her Tanzanian trip asked why he didn’t bring his infamous bread. Eddie wrapped up by fining everyone that missed the Wine Tour $1.00.
Chuck Patterson won the split club and I picked a card for Joe Starck but missed the Ace. John Coogan won the first loaf of Bri-bread and Gary won the 2nd loaf.
At this time Paul introduced Mark Mistretta. Mark is the Capital Facilities Manager of the NY state parks. Marks program was about the Niagara Falls parks and the outer harbor Parks. NY State has invested $82 million already in turning the Parks around. It was impressive how the Parks commission is concentrating on organic trails, bridges, dams and walk paths. So much has been done to make this a destination, you must come down and stroll around. They are leaving the large hotels for the city of Niagara Falls. The Whirlpool steps are complete. Next year Devils Hole stairs will be completed. That will complete a 4 mile hike down one set of stairs, a hike along the river where there are class 5 rapids, a walk up the other set of stairs and back to your car. Very inspiring presentation.
